Biography:
In the world of Hollownest, there was a Pale King born from the last Wyrm that had roamed the world. The Pale King ruled Hollownest with all the bugs and spiders and wasps. Many an insectoid race, but slowly from the moths came an infection of a goddess of the Moths  known as Radiance. It first appeared in the dreams of Hollownest's citizens. This light manifested itself as an infection that would put it's victims into a deep sleep, but would eventually awaken with broken minds.

Some of the lesser bugs tried to resist the Radiance's light, which only led to them being consumed by it moreso. Many citizens lost their wills and began attacking others against their will. The infection would also twist and morph the bodies of its hosts, and often form in bloated bright orange cysts on their bodies. Many reverted to their baser instincts, performing their duties as they had before but now as mindless slaves. Those that were caught up in the infection were linked into the Radiance's hive mind, allowing her to control their bodies if needed.

As the infection spread across Hollownest, many groups saught ways of fighting off the Radiance's light. Many of them ultimately useless and ended up in the deaths of hundreds if not thousands of innocent citizens. The Pale King devised his own scheme involving a strange substance known as Void. Far below the Pale King's castle was the entrance to a pit known as The Abyss. Within the Abyss was a lake composed of Void. The Pale King tried several different experiments to fight off the Radiance but eventually found only to contain it. To do this, he used Void in order to try and create a pure vessel.

So the Pale King and the Queen known as White Lady engaged in a union of some kind, resulting in the creation of several eggs that were dropped down into the Abyss. There, the Void seeped into these eggs, corrupting the offspring of the Pale King and White Lady. This act resulted in the creation of the Vessels.

The Vessels are not technically considered to be alive. Within each Vessel is a shade: a completely Void being hidden behind the face of the Vessel. Thousands of Vessels were created during this process, but only one was chosen as the pure Vessel. This Pure Vessel was deemed by the Pale King as the Hollow Knight, and was taken away to the White Palace.

See, the trial for what became the Pure Vessel was simply which one could make it out of the Abyss. Hundreds of Vessels climbing their way out only to fall back to it's bottom. Many of them dying, the shades inside roaming to attack more Vessels. That even one made it out was what made the Pale King believe it was a Pure Vessel. This is how Ghost was made, and while he wasn't the Pure Vessel that made it to the top of the Abyss first, he still made it.
