Shufen was born to not wealthy parents somewhere in China near the turn of century going into the industrial revolution. She very much lucked into schooling and priesthood that taught her magic as well as to write, read, and whatnot. Calligraphy was something see took to quite well and, as her school had more or less 'bought' her from her parents, she was further sold into a scribe to a local lord. The idea that everybody had a price was a lesson she learned early on. Her lord being rather laid back, so long as she was present during business meetings, accounting sessions, etc; there for all the important stuff, she was more or less free to do as she pleased. Gathering a bit of coin for herself, she'd go about tasting the locals to find what she enjoyed dabbling in until she came across a girl that she quite fancied. Upon buying her from whatever establishment she had gone to, she started up her own business in her free time, her companion being her first Lady of the Night and assistant to run things when she was doing her Lord's bidding. As business grew, so too did her roster of women, and eventually men as well. Not just sexual pleasures, but also things like geisha work. Hosts and hostesses that were bought for the pleasure of their company, and not so much their bodies.
