Biography:
Ryoko Hatomi grew up in feudal Japan in the 16th century. Peasants and whatnot were not allowed to become Samurai and only those of privileged birth were allowed. It was considered an honor and a birth right to become a Samurai. One was taught all the mannerisms and the hardships of life as a Samurai. There is no pain. There is no heat or cold. To show strength, and to retain honor in life as well as death. That is what it meant to be a Samurai.
In the year 1545, when she was only fifteen years old, she found herself a daimyo, or a feudal lord of a province. Her father was assassinated which left her in charge - as only Samurai were allowed to own land. She showed that she was more than capable, sussing out those responsible for the death of her father and granting them the mercy of seppuku.
Being the daimyo, Izu an albeit small province, she already knew the power struggles of the land around her. Lord Toranaga was a daimyo of the largest province east of Osaka and held sway over more than half a dozen other local provinces in a bid for power against Ishido, another daimyo of equally considerable authority.
Several years of battles and trials and tribulations saw her as one of Toranaga's most trusted advisers. That is, until Ishido made a move for war. While Toranaga himself was far too powerful to attack outright, her far smaller province was the first in line leading to Yedo(Major city in Toranaga's province). She woke one morning to more than half of her land on fire, most of her peasants taken, many of her samurai slaughtered, and a small army of enemy samurai marching into her town of Anshiro on the bay. She gathered as many of her own soldiers as she could before meeting the enemy in the streets, estimating that they were only slightly outnumbered, it would be a hard fought battle for sure.
The next morning saw herself and only a handful of her samurai remaining. The city around them almost demolished, and the shored blood soaked. The fighting had been fierce and almost had her life a number of times. Stacks of bodies were all around and the army was successfully waylaid into retreating. The problem was..the land around them was burning. There was no longer a province to hold, and no subjects to help run it. She was still the daimyo of Izu, but Izu itself was now empty and not worth the breath it took to speak it's name.
She saw her only course being seppuku, but her few remaining subjects convinced her to head back to Yedo and beseech Toranaga for help. She was in his best graces and was sure to heed her call to arms for vengeance. Giving the order to salvage what they could of Anshiro and search for survivors before catching up, the sunrise saw her leaving Anshiro and Izu alone, heading towards Toranaga's province and Yedo to see him.
