Biography:
Markias' life is one filled with mystery and confusion. He was found as a baby by an elderly woman on the barren world of Hellfire, who raised him until he was about thirteen years old. A mysterious man by the name of Lars came to the old woman and bought Markias for a large amount of trade goods. Lars raised Markias as his assistant in various experiments involving long forgotten sciences and magics.
When Markias was in his late teens, Lars revealed himself to be Alarzen, the former Guardian of Time. He was a godlike being created by the god Osphearion in order to bring balance to the elements of a world called Estai. He taught Markias the truth of the realm of Hellfire, that it was a lush, advanced planet called Estai before another Guardian became its ruler and used his power to strip the world down into a barren waste.
Alarzen told Markias that he would be his greatest experiment. He would infuse Markias with his godlike power over time, and would give him his greatsword that would function as a conduit to manifest his powers. There was, however, a drawback. Such infusion would rip Markias from the effects of time itself, making him ageless, but not immortal, and the more he used his powers, the more they would drain. He taught Markias the secret to time, that one did not affect time for themselves, but for the world around them, and that it was far easier to affect the time around a single object than an entire planet.
As for why Alarzen gave these boons to Markias, he wished for the boy to become his greatest cure, a fix for the destruction caused by Andramar, the ruler of Hellfire. He instructed Markias to go back to before the fall of the Guardians and kill Alarzen's past self with his own sword. Upon doing so, events would change and Andramar's rule would not begin with The Fall. However, to prevent him from eventually enacting his plan, Markias would have to kill Andramar as well.
Markias was not the one to question his teacher, but he was unsure if he could kill a Guardian, much less two. Alarzen assured Markias that he had to succeed for the greater good of the world, and told him of an ancient artifact that the Guardian's would be searching for, a cube known as the Nexus Heart. He told Markias it was important to hide this artifact where no Guardian could find it.
Markias accepted his mission, and accepted that this would be the last time he would see his teacher. He traveled to the past, an act that alerted Alarzen's past self to Markias' presence. He fought the Guardian, his blade striking down Alarzen with little effort. He then waited in hiding until the Guardian's Andramar and Alara took the throne of Estai. He waited years for his presence to become ignored and in the dark of night, disguised as a guard to the kingdom, Markias snuck into Andramar's chambers and struck him down in his sleep. Along the mantle of Andramar's fireplace, rested along a golden stand, was the Nexus Heart. He took the Heart, and deposited the soiled uniform in the barracks to place the blame on one of the guards, and traveled north to the frozen northlands of Asa Bay, throwing the Heart into the lake for the ice to seal away in hopes no one would find it.
Once his mission was complete, he would try to travel back to his own time, only to find his world no longer existed, only the future of the world he helped create. With no purpose left, he wanders this brave new world, seeking to help others in the name of the greater good.
