Biography: Assigned female at birth, they were the heiress of a series of islands known as Maku'tando; a tropical paradise. Their people were simple and efficient in their lifestyles. Palm trees, coconuts, growing and raising chickens, catching plenty of fish, excursions out into the open ocean to explore for more islands. That was the way of life for the people of Maku'tando.
Their given name was Kabo, but they quickly disliked that name, preferring to go by 'Ku' which was the name of the Maku'tando's people god of war and combat. They took to the tanfas pretty early on, insisting that they be proficient in combat. So their father, the king, had his personal guards train them in combat. It was at about the age of eight or nine that they started pushing the issue on their gender.
They never felt very much like a girl, and yet wasn't exactly a boy either. They felt themselves sitting somewhere between them, which compelled her to inform others that they would no longer go by 'she' or 'her'. They were no longer an heir'ess', as that insinuated a gender. Their father doted, and so it was.
It was their uncle, the king's brother, that had an issue with this. He was the kingdom's head priest, and declared that the Sun God was unhappy with this. The Heartless weren't so prevelent, given the small islands being rather remote, but the forces of darkness used this as an anchoring point, and infected the head priest.
They awoke one morning to a heartless standing over them and they struck out with their tanfas, dealing an insignicant amount of damage, but managed to get it off of them in order to escape. They ran to their parent's hut only to find them mutated and mindless slaves to the Heartless.
Unable to do much more than bat them away like flies attracted to a rotting carcass, Ku fled towards the shoreline where they had a number of rafts ready for a voyage. Pushing one into the water, they hopped up with a number of other rafts also heading for the horizon. They were no stranger to sailing, nor were their people that escaped the island with them. The last she could see of Maku'tando was the peak of it's mountain being swallowed by darkness.
Those that drifted toward them looked up for them to lead, and they did their best. The people drifting had no real direction to go as land to expand to was rarely found, nor would there be any promise that it too wouldn't be swallowed up by whatever alien shadows the Heartless were.
As hopeless as things were, eventually some rafts broke off from the group, thinking another direction a better option. The people following them drifted further and further apart until, one day a month into the voyage, food and clean water almost starting to run sparse, a brewing storm far off on the horizon turned towards them and rapidly grew into a supercell, throwing heavy winds, bolts of lightning, and even waterspouts around on the ocean. It was a force of nature they had never seen before.
When Ku awoke, it was night. Only the light of the moon illuminated the flat water. Ku was alone. There was no one else around. Their raft was broken in several places, drifting slowly in the currentless, windless waters. For the first time since they could remember, Ku sat down on a log in defeat, and cried out..though no one heard them.
