Biography: Koda was born in a world where children were randomly born as Shifters. Whatever gene was causing this was still beyond their technology to research, let alone the ability to alter. A hundred years ago, they would have simply killed the child, but through civil rights movements and sweeping activism, they've improved in social status to live as more of a house pet. No real rights to speak of except the right to life and to not be abused.
She slept in a kennel, was given scraps from the family's dining table, and was treated well in so far as Shifters like her go. Considering she also had her human moments, she was, of course, clothed properly, but was not considered as such by the rest of society. Being considered house pets, her parents decided one day that she was a burden on the family unit.
They drove out to the middle of nowhere, the car ride seeming to take forever. It was weird that her brothers and sister weren't with them, she remembered thinking, but then her mother and father weren't saying much either, even when questioned. She blinked when they seemed to be pulling over on the side of the road.
She looked around out the window and there was nothing in all directions as far as she could see, and when her father put the family van in park, she looked at both of them.
"Dad?"
Her father opened the driver side door and exited the vehicle. Her head turned with her eyes staying on him as he came around to open her sliding door. Her head turned back towards her mother who was still in the front seat in front of her.
"Mommy?"
Her father unbuckled her from the carseat and helped her to get out of the van, setting her on the ground.
"Dad, where are we?"
Nothing was said. He shut the door and walked back around to the driver side, opening the door and getting back in.
It was about now that she was beginning to realize what was happening. Tears starting coming to her as fear started welling up in her as the van started moving away back onto the road and away from her. A few seconds later it made a dramatic u-turn and sped away as fast as it could.
She just stood there and watched the kicked-up dust cloud slowly recede away out of view, tears streaming down her face.
